Private Blends

If you read pipe tobacco reviews people most often review tinned tobacco; Peterson, Mac Baren, Frog Morton, 1888, etc., but private blends that local tobacconists sell generally don't get the same amount of press. Today I want to review a couple of private blends that enjoy.

I live outside of Jackson, MS and when I first started pipe smoking I went to different shops hoping to find folks that steer me in the right direction, but tended to find that all of the shops specialized in cigars and sold some pipes and tobacco.   Therefore the people working there were cigar smokers rather than pipe smokers. Them I found The Country Squire. J.D. was and is a huge help in advising me and answering questions about pipes, pipe lighters and tobacco. 

Cherokee & Black Arrow Mix

Of the different private blends that I've tried from them the one that became my favorite was 1/2 Cherokee and 1/2 Black Arrow. Cherokee is a steamed Cavendish and Virginias with a very slight hint if vanilla and Black Arrow is a steamed, toasted Cavendish. I would compare it to Captain Black White.  I would describe it as a mild, yet flavorful aromatic; easy on the tongue with an extremely nice room note. It is my every day smoke.

In my travels I am often in Memphis, Tn and when I'm there I try to work it out during lunch to go and smoke a bowl or two. Great folks and you can always find someone to share a conversation and sit and smoke.

This one is definitely not an everyday smoke but if you've ever tried 1888's Mid Day and enjoyed that deep fruity flavor and aroma, you have an idea of what it is like. They refer to it as a Pistachio Blend; I find it as a wonderful diversion from my regulars; Cherokee/Black Arrow, Peterson's University Flake, Sherlock Holmes and Irish Oak.

OMG...University Flake

How much should you pay for a good pipe lighter

As the title suggests I’m asking the question, “How much should you pay for a good Pipe Lighter?”  Since lighters range in cost from a $1 Bic to around a $1,000 for a pimped out DuPont, how much is enough to get a good, reliable pipe lighter that will last you for years to come?
At the lower end of the spectrum you can buy an IMCO G77R for around $12-$15.  It has a 45 degree angled flame, flint & wheel ignition with a flame adjustment wheel.  But it is made out of plastic and feels rather flimsey.
  On the other hand you go with the Zippo which should run you somewhere between $15-$25; with the pipe insert.  It also, has flint & wheel ignition and is almost indestructible with its metal casing.  But with it’s liquid lighter fluid the taste transfer of the fluid to the tobacco leaves something to be desired.

Next you go opt for the Vertigo Briar which costs in the neighborhood of $25-$35.
 It is also made of metal and is fashioned after the IM Corona Old Boy.  I must say an attractive lighter.  It feels rather hefty and sound, but they tend to get somewhat “loose”  around the extended arm and the strike wheel causing some issues after a few months.

Or, you could step up to the Xikar Pipe Line; another Old Boy look alike, which weighs in at around $50-$60.  It comes with the horizontal strike wheel, flint ignition, 90 degree side angled soft flame and built in tamp. Not a bad lighter.

And if you want to have the coolest pipe lighter on the block you can empty your piggy bank and splurge for the IM Corona Old Boy ($100-$250); truly a nice lighter.   Again, it has flint ignition, horizontal double strike wheel, built in tamp, 90 degree side angled soft flame, but again costs over $100 and only has a 2 year warranty.  Most repairs (and all lighters need them at some time) will cost you around $50 or so.  So, is it worth the money?

So, how much should you pay? $15? $30? $50? or over $100?

Yibao Butane Pipe Lighter Leather by pipelighterexpert Two months ago I ordered a Yibao Pipe Lighter off of EBay. It was actually this leather wrapped butane pipe lighter that I'm reviewing today. However, they sent me the silver finished model by accident. Yesterday, this correct model arrived in the mail. It measures about 2" tall x 1" wide x 1/2" thick. It is made in the IM Corona Old Boy styling with the flip up arm arm and flame cover, horizontal strike wheel, flint ignition and butane fuel. The Yibao Pipe Lighter is made in China and this one cost me $8.20 INCLUDING SHIPPING! Can you believe that? One might expect to receive a plastic, cheaply made "Bic" type lighter. But instead this pipe lighter is all metal (with exception of the leather wrapped accent). The moving parts are nice and tight and it works extremely well. To light this pipe lighter you just flick up the flame cover arm with you thumb and rotate the strike wheel inward with the same thumb. Butane is released whenever the flame cover arm is up so when the strike wheel scrapes the flint and creates a spark the lighter ignites. To light your pile just hold the flame slightly over the bowl of your pipe and draw the flame in. To extinguish the flame lower the flame cover arm. There is a small cover in the bottom of the pipe lighter that unscrews that protects the flame adjustment screw and butane intake valve. The flame adjustment screw works easily to raise or lower the height of the flame, and, you can use regular premium refined butane to refill the lighter. I've included a YouTube video below if you want to see this pipe lighter in action. I have to say I really like this little lighter and enjoy using it. We'll see how well it works over time. Vector Armor Dual Flame Butane Pipe Ligjtet
